Bush Auto Bailout Inspires McCain To Speak Out

Arizona Senator John Sydney McCain via HotAir-

I regret the President’s decision to give away over $17 billion to the domestic automakers. Just last week, the Senate rejected a bailout plan because it failed to provide assurances that the domestic manufacturers would fundamentally change the way they do business to ensure their long-term viability. I find it unacceptable that we would leave the American taxpayer with a tab of tens of billions of dollars while failing to receive any serious concessions from the industry.

Allahpundit’s comment: “He must be telling the truth because this sure doesn’t fit the new and improved centristMaverick image he’s been cultivating lately.”

If you had any real doubts that the plan that President Bush and the auto industry/UAW agreed upon has a significant difference from the one the UAW rejected from the Senate Republicans last week, this denouncement from moderate Republican and erstwhile bailout supporter Senator John McCain should put those to rest.

Be assured that Detroit and the UAW would not have agreed to the White House’s deal had there been “three little words” in it, demanding a date by which concessions would be made.
