New York Post via Michelle Malkin:
The Democrat [Gov. David Paterson] also reportedly plans to increase taxes on insurance policies, on non-diet sodas under an “obesity tax,” reviving the state sales tax on clothing, and changes in funding of hospitals and health care providers that could shift more health costs on individuals and employers.
The claim that taxing non-diet soda is a strike against obesity is fallacious. There’s no proof that a tax will decrease consumption of non-diet soda. Additionally, studies show that diet soda drinkers are at greater risk of obesity that non-diet soda drinkers.
Perhaps if the Governor really wants to tax obesity, he should begin with the pork in his state budget.
