Update on El Coyote and Marjorie Christofferson

The L.A. Times reports on the life of Marjorie Christofferson since her encounter with the anti-Prop 8 mob:

Margie Christoffersen didn’t make it very far into our conversation before she cracked. Chest heaving, tears streaming, she reached for her husband Wayne’s hand and then mine, squeezing as if she’d never let go.

“I’ve almost had a nervous breakdown. It’s been the worst thing that’s ever happened to me,” she sobbed as curious patrons at a Farmers Market coffee shop looked on, wondering what calamity had visited this poor woman who’s an honest 6 feet tall, with hair as blond as the sun.

Well, Christoffersen was a manager at El Coyote, the Beverly Boulevard landmark restaurant that’s always had throngs of customers waiting to get inside. Many of them were gay, and Christoffersen, a devout Mormon, donated $100 in support of Proposition 8, the successful November ballot initiative that banned gay marriage.

She never advertised her politics or religion in the restaurant, but last month her donation showed up on lists of “for” and “against” donors. And El Coyote became a target.

A boycott was organized on the Internet, with activists trashing El Coyote on restaurant review sites. Then came throngs of protesters, some of them shouting “shame on you” at customers. The police arrived in riot gear one night to quell the angry mob.

The mob left, but so did the customers.

Sections of the restaurant have been closed, a manager told me Friday during a very quiet lunch hour. Some of the 89 employees, many of them gay, have had their hours cut, and layoffs are looming. And Christoffersen, who has taken a voluntary leave of absence, is wondering whether she’ll ever again be able to work at the restaurant, which opened in 1931 (at 1st and La Brea) and is owned by her 92-year-old mother.

“It’s been so hard,” she said, breaking down again.

A lot of customers saw Christoffersen as the face of the restaurant. She was the hostess who roamed from table to table with a pitcher of water, refilling glasses and schmoozing with friends.

Christoffersen, raised Mormon by her late father, told me she has no problem with gay people.

“I love them like everybody else.”

But she supports her church’s position that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Margie tried to smooth things over last month by inviting gay clients to a free lunch to talk it over, but she left in tears when asked if she would write a check to the group challenging Prop. 8.

She blubbered all over again as she thought back on the last month. She has been a nightly fixture at El Coyote for two decades, walking to work from her home just a few doors away. It’s been her life, she said. And she can’t stand that it’s been taken away.

On the other side, thousands of gay people can’t stand that their recent marriages could be taken away, and thousands more feel as though their civil rights have been violated.

So even if Margie returns to work at El Coyote, her husband said, “she will never, ever be back here on a Thursday night.”

Thursdays, as tradition had it, the place was mobbed with gay customers.

“We always joked around with Margie,” said [Bill] Schoeppner [another El Coyote manager], who’s been on the job 26 years. “I’m a Democrat and voted for Obama; she probably voted for McCain — so what? If she were a bigot or a homophobe, you wouldn’t have had all these gay people” working at the restaurant or eating at it.

Besides, the donation was personal.

“She didn’t cut a check from the restaurant,” added Archila, a 28-year employee. “The restaurant didn’t have anything to do with it.”

Archila said he and other employees voted no on Prop. 8 and gave money to the legal challenge. As someone who came to the U.S. 30 years ago from El Salvador, Archila said, he’s always cherished this country’s right of free speech and the diversity of opinion.

“You can express yourself as a citizen,” said Archila. “Not everyone has to believe the same things.”

For a $100 donation, Marjorie’s life has been forever changed.  Yet the mob actions against Marjorie and El Coyote have not advanced their cause of overturning Prop 8 in any measurable way.  The anti-Prop 8 mob was successful only if hate-filled retribution was their actual goal.

  • This story is the epitome of all the wrong done in the wake of the marriage battle by the opposition. The media should have supported this woman, instead, the L.A. Times listed her on their website as a p8 supporter even though her contribution was so little.

Private donations are an expression of free speech, and as a major force in print media, the L.A. Times should have presented that facet of the issue first and foremost. Instead, the Times ignored that and looked the other way while gay activists went to war with the information provided by their Times’ own website. The blogs and other so-called “Pajama Media” put the big dogs to shame on this one.

At least they’ve come out with a sympathetic interview of her…what, only a month and a half late?

  • She exposed herself for the bigot she really is. If she had given money to the KKK because her HYPOCRITICAL church (as most organized religion is evil) told her to and she had blacks in her employ this would be a WHOLE different story. I have the right NOT to eat anywhere I want. Not a hate campaign just expressing my rights too. Get over it hypocrites. And if you are going to be a bigot don’t hide behind your religion just be honest about it. If Marjorie had just said yeah I donated so what, I’d have more respect for her instead of all her phony crying and carrying on. Mormons are the worst hypocrites on the planet, 3 WIVES? Give me a break, whose marriage are they trying to protect? My mother was married 4 times, what institution are they protecting? What total BS!

  • The Bible is crystal clear on divorce; remarrying after a divorce is tantamount to adultery (Malachi 2:16; Matt. 19:6, Matt. 5:32 etc.). So until these so-called “Christians” put an equal effort in combating what is really destroying the American family (and it’s not Gay marriage) by supporting LEGAL measures agaisnt unjustified divorce, then all I can deduce is that they are BIGOTS who are scapgoating a minority for problems caused by the heterosexual majority. Then again Mormons aren’t really known for their fair treatment of minorities (when did Blacks get full equality in the Mormon church?)

  • I feel for Marjorie, it’s sad when one has been so brainwashed by their church. She claimed the church asked for for a donation and she gave it to them.

I think people are confused. Most people could careless about her PERSONAL feelings towards marriage. What most people take great offense with is when ANYONE finds it acceptable to take away RIGHTS from AMERICAN CITIZENS.

Same-sex marriage was legal in California and yet for the first time in the history of the United States of America, we just voted to REMOVE rights from certain citizens. It’s shameful, wrong and immoral.

Sure, I understand having a open dialog on the issues of the day, but will NOT tolerate anyone advocating the taking away for rights from Citizens of the United States of America.

It reminds me, in Nazi Germany, the Christians once said “It’s okay because they are JEWS” As the Christians supported HITLER, then in America, the Christians once said “It’s okay because they’re BLACK” As the Christians supported SLAVERY! Today, these Christians are at it again, as they say “It’s okay because they’re GAY”

Well, I’m here to tell you… it was NOT okay in Nazi Germany and it surely is not okay in the United States of America in the year 2009.

Abraham Lincoln once said, that all mankind deserves the same rights and freedoms as anyone else, and anyone choosing to take away such rights, should indeed have NO rights at all.

I find it amazing that Saddam threatened the rights of American Citizens and we went to WAR, the Mormons amongst others go after the rights of certain Americans and we do NOTHING? How can that be? We should demand that our government go after anyone that would support the taking away of rights from other Americans. Again, it is shameful, wrong and immoral and will no longer be tolerated.

Can you imagine… we’re overseas fighting two wars and yet in the United States we are now voting to remove rights from Americans. How is that possible? And will you only care when it personally effects you?

Again, I have no issues at all with someone believe that marriage should be between a man and woman. No issues with that at all, but when you go after the RIGHTS of other American citizens. Shame on YOU! You should be in prison for such actions. Shame shame shame on YOU!

Then there are those that say this is about tradition. Well, I would have to ask… who’s tradition. And whom are you to define MY tradition or my childrens?

Who’s tradition should we go with? Should we go with the oldest tradition in America? The oldest in the United States would be… ONE white man and ONE white woman? Is that the tradition you want? Sadly many Americans would say yes.

What about the oldest Mormon tradition? You know… the one with multiple wives? What about the Jewish tradition or the Muslim?

Who is ANYONE to define my tradition of marriage?

Then the Christians wanting to control society with the bible. Have you read the bible? Because NO where in the bible does Jesus or God speak in a negative tone to homosexuality or Gay marriage. And on a side note… The Romans were marrying same-sex couples LONG before the Christians got involved with marriage. As a matter of fact, same-sex couples were marrying even when Jesus walked the planet and yet Jesus said NOTHING. Yes, it’s true… .JESUS is not quoted ANYWHERE saying anything about homosexuality or Gay marriage. Jesus was quite vocal during his time on earth, had it been a issue… Jesus would have surely mentioned it. And religious scholars from all walks and faiths will tell you the same thing. And that is … JESUS said NOTHING at all.

Which begs to my question… then why do you?
