How sweet. Now that Senator Joe Lieberman (CT-I) has officially been received back into the good graces of the Democrat caucus, goodwill is abounding on Capitol Hill. It was announced today, after a closed door meeting of the caucus, that Lieberman would be allowed to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. He was stripped instead of his subcommittee chairmanship of the Environment and Public Works Committee. By all accounts, this was a victory for Lieberman, the senator who had opposed the Democrat caucus by supporting Republican John McCain in the presidential election.
Why would the Democrats, nursers of grudges and bearers of old wounds never healed, be so magnanimous towards someone who clearly betrayed them? Charity? Kindness? Forgiveness?
Democrats have had a 51-to-49 advantage in the Senate because Mr. Lieberman and another independent, Senator Bernard Sanders of Vermont, caucus with them. But Democrats picked up at least six seats in the elections, with three contests are (sic) still undecided. If the Democrats triumph in all three, they will have the 60-to-40 majority needed to defeat debate-stalling filibusters – provided that Mr. Lieberman and Mr. Sanders continue to caucus with them.
“I think we did what was appropriate,” Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts said.
Question #1: Are we really expected to believe that the Democrat caucus considered, even for a microsecond, standing on principle and ousting Lieberman for his apostasy? He screwed them. They need him. We know it.
Question #2: Who the heck is John Kerry and why should we care what he thinks?
